The hotel triples its rate in Ramadan. The fixed fare taxi does not move by a riyal.
That gap is the whole trick to peak season transport. Most pilgrims from the US and the UK find it out after paying SAR 90 for a ride that cost SAR 25 the week before. I have done Umrah in two Ramadans and over three Christmas breaks.
The transport bill was the one line I learned to hold still. This covers the two peak windows Western families book, where the overcharging happens, and how to lock the fare before you fly.
The Two Peak Seasons Western Families Book
Ramadan and the Christmas school break are the two windows when US and UK families travel together. They behave in opposite ways.
Ramadan 2027 is expected to run from about 8 February to 9 March. That lands on the UK February half term, so families plan a year ahead. Makkah hotels fill months out, and the last ten nights are the most crowded period of the year outside Hajj. The Christmas break, from about 19 December to 4 January, is the reverse. Flights from London, New York and Toronto are at their most expensive. Makkah itself is mild, 25 degrees by day, and the Haram is busy rather than packed.
The rule for both is the same. The flight and the hotel will cost more. The ground transport does not have to.
Why Umrah Taxi Prices Rise in Peak Season
Three things push the fare up, and none of them applies to a fixed per car price booked in advance.
Ride apps raise fares with demand. After Taraweeh in Ramadan a hotel to Haram trip shows two to three times the daytime rate, and the nearest driver is 15 minutes away. Airport rank drivers quote a “Ramadan rate” to anyone arriving without a booking. SAR 400 for the Jeddah to Makkah run is common in the last ten nights. Hotels add transfer desks that resell the same cars at a margin.
A registered company with a published fare list charges SAR 250 for a Camry from Jeddah Airport in Ramadan, in the Christmas break and in September. The list does not have a season column.
Fixed Fares Against Peak Season Prices
The difference is clearest on the routes a family cannot avoid.
| Route | Fixed fare, Camry | Peak season app or rank price |
| Jeddah Airport to Makkah | SAR 250 | SAR 350 to 450 |
| Hotel to Haram, after Taraweeh | SAR 20 to 50 | SAR 60 to 120 |
| Makkah to Madinah | SAR 450 | SAR 600 to 800 |
| Madinah Airport to hotel | SAR 150 | SAR 200 to 300 |
Add it up over a ten day Ramadan trip with both airport legs, the intercity run and a dozen local rides. The gap is about SAR 900 for a family. That is USD 240 or GBP 180 that buys nothing extra.
Booking the Jeddah Airport Transfer in Ramadan
Book it four to six weeks before the flight, and never later than two. Registered companies fill the last ten nights first. Send the flight number, the number of passengers and bags, and the hotel name. Ask for the vehicle to be named in the confirmation.
Expect the Jeddah Airport to Makkah drive to take two hours rather than 90 minutes in the last ten nights. The roads into the central area close in stages after Isha. A driver who meets you inside the terminal with the fare already fixed removes the only part of that night you can control.
Makkah to Madinah During the Last Ten Nights
Leave Makkah after Fajr, not after Taraweeh. The road is clear, the rest areas are quiet, and the hotel room in Madinah is ready at noon. Night departures in Ramadan sit in the exit traffic for an hour before the highway.
The Makkah to Medina fixed fare holds at SAR 450 for the Camry and SAR 600 for the Staria whatever the date. Book the return leg at the same time under the same name. The Madinah to Makkah direction sells out first as pilgrims move back for the final nights.
Christmas Break Transport Is the Easy Season
The Christmas break pairs expensive flights with quiet roads. Airport pickups run to time, the Makkah to Madinah road is empty, and ziyarat loops finish early because nothing is closed.
Book transport anyway. Two weeks out is enough. Add a half day ziyarat in each city, because the December weather is the best of the year for Jabal al Nour and Uhud. The one trap is 31 December and 1 January. Jeddah Airport is at its busiest with returning residents, and a pre booked car saves an hour at the rank.
Signs You Are About to Overpay for Peak Season Transport
Each of these has cost someone I travelled with real money.
- A deposit requested before pickup, which a registered company does not ask for
- A “Ramadan price” quoted without a published list to check it against
- A fare given per person rather than per car
- A hotel transfer desk price that is higher than the same company’s own website
- A WhatsApp quote with no vehicle, no date and no total in one message
The best Umrah taxi I booked for Ramadan 2026 sent the same SAR 250 confirmation in the last ten nights that it sent my cousin in October. The driver’s name arrived the night before. That is the standard, and peak season is when it matters most.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I book Ramadan 2027 Umrah transport?
By early December 2026 for travel in the last ten nights, and by mid January for the first half of the month. Registered companies hold a fixed number of cars per night and the final nights sell out first. Flights and hotels for Ramadan 2027 should be booked earlier still, from September 2026.
Is Umrah cheaper in the Christmas break or in Ramadan?
The Christmas break, by a wide margin. Hotels within walking distance of the Haram cost two to three times more in Ramadan than in late December, and flights from the US and UK are high in both windows. Transport is the same price in both if it is booked on a fixed fare.
Can I do Umrah in Ramadan with children on a UK half term?
Yes. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on about 8 February, so the February half term covers the first week of the month, when crowds are lighter than the last ten nights. Book the airport transfer in a Staria so the children can sleep on the night drive in.
Are Umrah taxis available during Taraweeh and the night prayers in Ramadan?
Yes, but not at the Haram gates. The central area closes to traffic from before Isha until the crowds clear, so a pre booked driver waits at an agreed point outside the ring, usually a ten minute walk. Agree the point in the chat before the trip, not on the night.
Do fixed Umrah taxi fares change for Eid al Fitr?
No. A registered company charges the same per car fare on Eid as on any other day, but availability is the problem, because drivers take the Eid days off and the airport is at its busiest with departures. Book the Eid departure transfer at the same time as the arrival one.
